Safely Heating Your Home this Winter

There are numerous dangers involved in the business of heating your home. Conventional heaters and radiators can be fire hazards and inexpertly installed central heating poses the threat of asphyxiation.

Central heating systems need to be regularly maintained. Before the onset of winter, it is necessary that the mechanisms are tested by a professional to ensure that no noxious gas is emitted.

As an additional precaution to ensure safe heating in your home , ventilation points should be checked. Chimneys need to be clean and unblocked, and air vents must be free from obstruction. If the airflow in a centrally heated house is inhibited, and for some reason the system malfunctions, suffocation is a genuine threat.

Freestanding heaters and radiators can be similarly dangerous. The risk of fire is ever-present, particularly if your heating system involves an open gas flame. In order to reduce the risk of fire, heating devices should stand at least a metre away from furniture and appliances, and under no circumstances should they be covered in any way.

Under-floor heating, increasingly popular throughout the world, is perhaps the safest means by which to warm a space this winter. Unlike many heating solutions, this kind of system does not release gas and, similarly, poses no immediate fire hazard. Systems can be installed beneath wooden or tiled floors and are, as a result, space-saving and practical. Safety is paramount at all times and so checking that the heating in your home is of a satisfactory level is not something to be ignored.
