Power Failure Safety Tips

Power failures are not a common occurrence; however, if and when a power cut does take place, it is necessary to know how to deal with it. And when I say dealing with it, I don't mean knowing exactly how many candles to light! I mean what to do in order to avoid accidents and ensure safety.

Although most people have emergency lights, candles are used commonly too. Since candles have an open flame, it is important to keep them away from anything that can catch fire. Smoke Detectors may not work during a power failure, depending on which smoke alarm you have. Candles should also be kept away from the reach of children. Besides, keeping the light source on a higher level is better for even illumination of the room.

Heating can also be a big problem if there is no power. There are small portable heaters specifically designed for residential use and that comply with safety standards and only these should be used in the house during a power cut.

It is easy to forget what has been left on when the power goes out. But to avoid any accidents or mishaps, or in fact, any damage to your appliances, remember to switch appliances off when the power goes out. This includes central heating, washing machine, fridge etc.

Smoke alarms are absolutely vital. They are early detectors of fire! If there is a fire in the house, and we are away or asleep, it is the smoke alarm that can alert us. Obviously, smoke alarms that are connected to the mains cannot work during a power failure. This is why battery operated smoke detectors are better as they work independently.
