A Short Guide to Online Safety Etiquette

There is a virtual world out there that is as complex and as thriving as the 'real' world. Who inhabits this world? We do. Most of us have some sort of online existence be it through our email account, our social networking profile or our bank account.

While most of us are taught how to conduct ourselves in the real world, there is a concept of virtual etiquette that we all need to familiarise ourselves with. Online dating entails a lot of virtual social interaction. How you conduct yourself virtually determines what kind of relationships you form and what type of people you attract toward yourself. One thing to always remember about virtual interaction is that one ought to be just as accountable and responsible as one would be in the real world.

Speaking of responsibility, online dating should be synonymous with safe dating. Bear in mind that you are dealing with real people living real lives. Never rush into an intimate exchange without making sure you trust the person. You wouldn't tell your entire life history to a person you've just met at a bar, why do so online?

In the world of virtual dating, the first way of showing interest is obviously an introductory mail or message. It is alright not to pay heed to a message if you don't feel the person is suitable for you. However, once a relationship has been established through a few messages, it is nice to be polite and give an explanation should you wish to end the relationship.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to virtual dating, but it is always advisable to be polite, responsible and clear while indulging in any type of online social interaction.
